Buying a piece of pearl jewelry can be very confusing. There are so many types of pearls available in the market with so many names, qualities, and price tags. With modern technology faux or imitation pearls can look very close to a natural one in appearance. There is nothing wrong with getting a beautiful piece with imitation pearls you like, as long as you are aware of that. Unfortunately, all traders are not honest and you could end up buying a piece you fell in love with, believing it to be something else of a higher value. So here is a list of simple tests you can use anywhere.

1. Look- If you look carefully, ideally with a magnifying glass, you can see some irregularities in shapes and sizes if it is a genuine natural pearl. Naturally formed pearls can’t be all even and of the same shape in a necklace regardless of their price.

2. Color- Natural pearls often come with an undertone color. Faux pearls never come in that way. Faux pearls even come in different bright colors, such as red, electric blue, neon green, which is not possible in a natural one!

3. Weight- Normally genuine pearls are heavier than faux pearls. However, shell pearls are heavier than natural pearls.

4. Touch- Natural pearl feels cooler at the beginning when you touch it compared to faux pearl.

5. Drill hole- The hole of a natural pearl is small and smooth. Faux pearls normally have bigger holes, rough edges, and uneven pigmentation.

6. Feel- If you rub a natural pearl gently on the front of your teeth you will get a gritty or sandy feeling. Faux pearl gives a smooth feeling.

7. Price- Price is another way of judging a pearl. Faux pearls are generally cheaper than high-quality natural pearls. However, the price of natural pearls can vary widely depending on the appearance, size, and the source from where they originated.
